At the time of his marriage he was listed as a flax dresser.
James and Martha's first daughter, Agnes, died in 1847 in Dundee. At the time James was a heckler at Hilltown, Dundee.
James' death certificate shows his father was a bootmaker - the above Thomas wasn't a bootmaker, but the John Marr at Hilltown was a bootmaker.
It therefore seems that our James was in the household of John and Agnes, especially since later censuses seem to indicate the James from Arbroath was still living in Arbroath:

James and Martha with their son Peter came to Australia on the "Ann Milne". They arrived at Port Phillip on 19 May 1849. James was a gardener aged 22, and Martha his wife was also aged 22. They were Presbyterian.
The Marr family bible shows James and Martha had one still born child.
At the time of his death he was a farmer. He died from tuberculosis of lungs and larynx after 1 year. His father was Thomas Marr, bootmaker. His mother was unknown. The informant was Thomas Miller Marr, son, 31 Ballarat Road Footscray. The undertaker was J Casey. The witnesses at his burial were R Casey and R Jukes. He was born in Dundee, Scotland. He had lived in Victoria for 50 years.
